About the Festival
VGIK International Student Festival is one of the oldest student film showcases. The first Festival was held in 1961. The main film competition consisted of 29 films, the Grand-Prix being granted to Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky for his diploma work “The Boy and the Dove". | |||
After that, the Festival became a regular event.The most prominent and respected filmmakers, who studied in VGIK, received their first awards at VGIK Festivals. Among them are Nikita Mikhalkov,Alexander Petrov, Yury Shiller, Elem Klimov, Artavazd Peleshyan,Sergey Solovyov, Irakly Kvirikadze and many others. | |||
In 1970 the Festival became international.Students and representatives from Polish National Film School, Lodz; Higher School of cinema, GDR; National Institute of Theatrical Arts n.a. Karpenko-Karov, Ukraine were the first foreign participants. | |||

It’s hard to find any famous person in Russian film industry, who hasnt sat on the Jury of the Festival. The main competition jury consists of the most prominent professional filmmakers, actors, producers and film critics. Many of them are VGIK alumni, who made their first steps in cinema at VGIK. The main idea of the Festival is that VGIK is a big family and hardly any person whose life is connected with VGIK, can but accept the invitation to judge the younger generations. | |||
In 1998 the Festival acquired an annual status, its geography expanded enormously andthe student jury appeared. In 2006 the Theatrical International Competition was introduced,and every year over 80 students from all over the world come to show their stage productions. | |||

Most of the screenings and performances of the Festival take place in VGIK. Within the Festival special master-classes, excursions, technical educational courses and discussions of the films are happening.The most important thing in VGIK International Festival is that students themselves organize it.And we are really looking forward to see filmmakers and their films at our Festival! | |
