On December 8, 2010 the Student Academic Society(SAS) together with the International Affairs Department held its 6th session. The discussion focused on the problems of the young German cinema and was preceded by the viewing of the film “Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei” by Hans Weingartner.
The critical apprehension of reality has always been of highest priority to Hans Weingartner. His debut film “Das Weisse Rauschen” was awarded the prestigious Max Ophuls prize, the German film critics called it the best debut of 2001. His second film “Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei” was selected for the 2004 Cannes film festival, later that year the Association of German film critics called it the best film.
During the lively and non-formal discussion the German director phrased his aesthetic and political creed. It won’t be much of the exaggeration to say that Weingartner is a true successor of the “young angry Britons”. The youthful intransigence of his protagonists turns into the weapon aimed at their parents’ conformism. As soon as the kids stand on their own feet they start in a big way to bring up their parents, who betrayed the ideals of their youth. The discussion was of great interest to the students studying scriptwriting and film directing.
